Bestseller Club Author Greg Iles Back to Writing After Life-Threatening Accident

Thriller and crime novelist Greg Iles found himself at a crossroads, literally and figuratively. He was at a stop-sign in Mississippi thinking about which direction to take his next novel when he pulled onto the highway and got hit by another car going 70 mph.

Iles lost his leg and says he came pretty close to dying. After extensive rehab and soul-searching, Iles finished Natchez Burning, the first in a trilogy about unsolved civil rights murders.

In an interview with Book Page, Iles said he is not pulling any punchs in this book. “Life’s too short; I’m not going to play that game. I’m just going to put it down.

natchez burning

In his first published novel in five years, Iles features former prosecutor Penn Cage in rural Mississippi trying to solve the mystery of a late night incident that may get his Atticus Finch-like father charged with murder. The trail points to a group of secretive KK members who call themselves the “Double Eagles” and may have been responsible for a string of unsolved murders in the 1960s.

Adventurous Author – Stuart Woods

Born in Georgia, Stuart Woods joined the Air National Guard after college and moved to New York City in search of a writing job. He wound up at an ad agency until he was sent to Mannheim, Germany with the Air National Guard.

He spent the 1970s in London working in advertising again. When he inherited from his grandfather, he bought a boat and entered the Observer Singlehanded Transatlantic race, spending six weeks alone at sea. His non-fiction book, Blue Water, Green Skipper  (first published in 1977, republished in 2012) chronicles the experience of that race. Charlton Heston starred in the CBS television dramatization of that book.

Woods is still a licensed pilot, owns a power boat and has partial ownership in a yacht.

He published fifteen novels before appearing on the New York Times bestseller list. His publishers have now requested three books a year from him.

According to his website, his famous character Stone Barrington is entirely fictional and not based on a real N.Y.P.D. homicide detective.

The latest in the Stone Barrington series, Unintended Consequences, is coming out in April 2013.

Three Authors in One

Did you know that Jayne Ann Krentz, Amanda Quick and Jayne Castle are the same author? One woman writes under those three different names. According to her official website she does it so, “readers always know which of my three worlds they will be entering when they pick up one of my books.”

Jayne Ann Krentz is her married name and is reserved for her contemporary romantic suspense.

Amanda Quick is a pseudonym used for historical romantic suspense. Quick’s newest work, the Mystery Woman, is coming in April 2013.

mysterywoman

Jayne Castle is her birth name that she uses for futuristic/paranormal romantic suspense.

Krentz/Quick/Castle has also written non-fiction works on the impact of the romance genre. Before writing full-time, Krentz worked as a librarian, but her libraries probably didn’t carry too many romances. She was a part of the academic and corporate library world.

Jayne on romance: “The romance genre is the only genre where readers are guaranteed novels that place the heroine at the heart of the story. These are books that celebrate women’s heroic virtues and values: courage, honor, determination and a belief in the healing power of love.”
